Expedition 33 – How to Beat Renoir (Lumière)

In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Renoir is distinguishable from other expedition parties by his signature cane, although he shares their human like appearance. He is a master of Light-based spells, which can be devastatingly harmful. If you want to defeat the boss in Lumière, consider following this guide for success!

Renoir Location in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Once you have met Renoir at Stone Wave Cliffs, Old Lumière, and The Monolith, you are going to battle him one last and final time to round up Act 3 in Lumière. Two phases that are rather distinct unfold in the battle, so it’s important to strengthen your characters and be well prepared before engaging with him.

How to Defeat Renoir in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

First Phase

Renoir can deal significant damage to your team if you’re not ready, so it’s crucial to parry his attacks whenever possible. Most of his moves are parryable, but keep an eye out for his slow blade swing—that one requires a well-timed jump instead of a parry.

During the battle, Renoir will summon Visages to generate a shield. To break through it, use free-aim shots to target and eliminate the Visages. Alternatively, abilities like Maelle’s Breaking Rules are also highly effective for removing his shield.

Second Phase

In the second phase, Renoir’s HP drops significantly, giving you a chance to finish the fight quickly if you maintain an aggressive approach. However, his attacks become much more powerful, with the potential to one-shot your teammates so it’s still vital to counter or dodge effectively to keep up your damage output.

Once Renoir’s health is critically low, Maelle will automatically step in during a cutscene, intercepting his final strike and bringing the battle to a close.

Tip: After taking down the previous boss, Creation, it’s best not to rush into the final battle right away. Make sure your party is at least level 70 before challenging Renoir, this will ensure you can deal a solid amount of damage during the fight.

Renoir’s Strategies and How to Counter Them in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Black Hole

Renoir creates a black hole above him that he later sends toward the group.
How to Counter: Watch the black hole swell in size as it charges. After a short delay, you’ll hear a sound cue (a “zing”) right before it’s released. Time your Dodge or Parry right after this sound.

Renoir’s Double Swing

Renoir will raise his cane before striking upward, pause briefly, and then follow up with a downward hit.
How to Counter: Jump as soon as you see him lift his cane. After a short pause, be ready to either Dodge or Parry the downward strike.

Void Meteorite

Five glowing orbs form a star-like shape around Renoir. Once aligned, the camera zooms out and the orbs are launched in a specific order at a target, briefly stunning them.
How to Counter: When the orbs align, keep your eyes on the bottom-left one, it’s the first to fire after a quick charge and flash. You can either Parry just after the flash or Dodge early to avoid damage. The attack order is: Bottom Left, Top, Top Right, Bottom Right, and Top Left.

Void Cross

Renoir swings his weapon twice, creating a glowing Chroma cross in front of him. He then targets a player following an audio cue.
How to Counter: Once the second Chroma line appears, anticipate the incoming strike and be ready to Dodge or Parry.

Five Hit Combo

Renoir targets a single player with a five-part melee sequence: swinging from left to right, leaping to deliver a top-down strike, followed by another right-side hit. He then ascends and charges a final, powerful blow.
How to Counter: Each strike has a delayed rhythm, with Renoir telegraphing moves by waving his weapon. Carefully observe his motion and time your Dodges or Parries accordingly.

Summon Axons

Renoir summons Sirene, Visages, and Axons to aid him. Visages may give him Shields.
How to Counter: Use abilities that can break Shields effectively—such as Maelle’s “Breaking Rules” or Monoco’s “Chevaliere Piercing.”

Frantic Attack

Renoir hovers near a target and executes an 8-hit combo: beginning with a right swing, a pause, then a left swing. He briefly returns to center, then dashes right, left, right, and right again. He pauses in the center before a rapid frontal spin attack, causing the screen to turn black and white before crashing down.
How to Counter: Each strike has a varied delay, with Renoir giving visual cues via his weapon movement. Watch him closely to time your Dodges or Parries.

Pool of Darkness

Renoir flies upward, spins his weapon, pauses, and then crashes down to trigger three explosive bursts.
How to Counter: The first explosion occurs after he reaches his highest point and swings his weapon. Be prepared to Parry or Dodge as he descends, then immediately ready yourself for two more follow-up explosions.

Rewards

Upon successfully defeating Renoir, you’ll receive the following rewards:

  • Renoir Outfit (Verso)
  • XP: 183,000
  • 9,800 Chroma
