In the Doctors Inside Borders side quest in The Outer Worlds 2, Doc Hollis Beardsley at Matriarch’s Mercy needs your help. The settlement is overflowing with refugees, and many of them are sick or injured. Doc Hollis can’t handle it all alone, so he asks you to find and recruit a few medical specialists who can lend a hand.
Doctors Inside Borders Quest
Start this quest by heading to the large building on the eastern side of Matriarch’s Mercy. Near the entrance, you will find Doc Hollis Beardsley. Talk to him and ask what he needs. Doc Hollis gives you a datapad written by Seer Wiley. It contains clues about where you can find people who might be able to help with the medical crisis.
Your goal now is to recruit one or more of three specialists: the Taxidermist, the Plumber, or the Automech Doctor. You only need to recruit one to finish the quest, but bringing in all three will reward you with extra XP.
Recruit the Taxidermist
Head to the northern part of Matriarch’s Mercy, where you will meet Gregory Farnham, a taxidermist. Talk to him, and he will agree to help only if you bring him Dead Sprats.
You can get these by travelling to Fort Endurance, north of Golden Ridge. Follow your quest marker to find Frankie Billings, who’s located inside a nearby cave. She will offer to sell you the Dead Sprats for 750 Bit Cartridges, but you can avoid paying if you have Observation 8, Speech 8, or the Intimidator perk. Once you get the Dead Sprats, return to Gregory and hand them over. He will then agree to help Doc Hollis. Completing this step gives you +324 XP.
Recruit the Plumber
Next, go to the trenches northwest of Matriarch’s Mercy to find Benjamin Dorsey, a plumber who’s tinkering with some machinery. Speak with him, and he will initially refuse, saying he’s not ready. To convince him, tell him that you’ve already recruited the taxidermist (Gregory Farnham) or use a Speech 8 dialogue option. Either way, Benjamin will agree to help out at Matriarch’s Mercy. You will earn +324 XP for recruiting him.
Recruit the Automech Doctor
The third specialist is an automechanical doctor located at a camp in the southwestern part of Golden Ridge, which will be marked on your map. When you find it, approach the Automech and start a conversation. You can recruit it by selecting one of the following dialogue choices:
- Bypass all navigation systems and return to the last known location of your charging pad (requires the Brilliant trait)
- A Hack 8 or Automech Anatomist perk dialogue option. Once successfully recruited, you will gain +324 XP for completing the objective.
Return to Doc Hollis Beardsley
After recruiting at least one of the specialists, return to Doc Hollis Beardsley at Matriarch’s Mercy. He will thank you for your help and reward you with the Essence of Vigour Micro. You will also gain +1,080 XP for completing the quest and +324 XP for your last objective. Additionally, your Reputation with the Order of the Ascendant will increase by +1.
