In DOOM: The Dark Ages, Chapter 5 is where you first get to fly the Slayer’s dragon. This part of the game also works as a tutorial, teaching you how to control the dragon in the air. During this chapter, there’s a hidden challenge called “Layover” that rewards you with extra gold if you find and land at two secret spots. These landing zones aren’t marked on your map, so you will need to explore carefully to find them. In this guide, we will discuss where both the landing zones are and how you can fly the dragon.
All Secret Landing Zones
The first time you get to ride the Slayer’s dragon is in Chapter 5, which also acts as a long tutorial. To complete the “Layover” challenge, you’ll need to land and get off your dragon at two hidden spots. These landing zones aren’t shown on your map, so you’ll have to find them on your own. Discovering both locations completes the challenge and rewards you with 50 extra gold.
1. Landing Zone
To the left of the large open space lies the first secret landing zone. A Titan demon atop a nearby tower may be seen to the left; defeat it before landing.
2. Landing Zone
This landing zone is below the centralmost Hell Carrier, at the bottom of the area. To observe two Titan demons, approach them. Then descend and kill them, and land.
How to Ride the Dragon
Flying the dragon in DOOM: The Dark Ages is pretty simple, and the game walks you through the controls early in Chapter 5. You can ascend with R1 (RB on Xbox) and descend with L1 (LB). Use L2 (LT) to activate the Assault Mode. To fire the autocannon, use R2 (RT). To dodge, press Circle (B on Xbox) along with a direction. Pressing L3 (LS) gives you a speed boost, while R3 (RS) lets you land or perform a finisher move.
