One of the early side quests in Avowed is Mapping the Living Lands, which becomes available after completing the first few story missions. You can accept this quest from Sanza in Paradis, who is searching for his missing cartographer, Geirmund. Last seen in Dawnshore, Geirmund has vanished, and it’s up to you to find him—or whatever remains of him.
Unlike most side quests in Avowed, Mapping the Living Lands doesn’t provide a quest marker, leaving you to search for Geirmund without clear direction. While you can wander around hoping to find him, the guide below will help streamline your search.
Gathering Information on the Missing Cartographer in Avowed
Sanza only tells you that Geirmund’s location is east of Paradis, near a cave. While this might be useful if you’ve already explored much of Dawnshore, it won’t be very helpful if most of your map is still obscured.
In his letter to Sanza, Geirmund mentions that he is investigating several ruins in Usher’s Hand, located in the Southern Embrace region, east of Paradis. While it’s not far from the city walls, it remains a perilous area in Avowed.
Before venturing into this area, ensure you’re well-equipped with at least a tier two weapon. Many enemies here are highly resistant to damage unless you’re using a Fine-quality weapon. Without one, defeating them will be difficult, and you may find yourself sent to The Beyond multiple times before locating Geirmund. If you haven’t acquired a suitable weapon yet, consider upgrading your current gear at your camp.
Finding the Missing Cartographer in Avowed
When you arrive east of Paradis, you’ll encounter several ruins and skeleton enemies. While some are tier one, others—like an archer and a monk—are rank two. To defeat them efficiently, use a Fine-quality weapon or focus on eliminating the lower-tier skeletons first. The tier two archer appears in the initial wave of enemies, so prioritising them is crucial.
After defeating the skeletons, climb the rocks to the northern part of the ruins, where you’ll find Geirmund’s body—he didn’t survive the expedition. However, his map lies on the ground nearby. Pick it up and return to Sanza, who is ready to purchase it from you.
Returning to Sanza With Information on the Missing Cartographer in Avowed
Sanza’s shop is located in the northern part of Paradis, within the High Market district. This upscale area of Avowed features pricier shops but offers superior equipment and items. You can only access it after rescuing the ambassador from the Overgrown Frontier region. Once you’ve saved him, he grants you entry to the rest of Paradis, including the High Market.
Sanza’s map shop is just to the right of the High Market entrance. When you visit, explain what happened to his assistant. Though saddened by the news, he appreciates the map, bringing the Mapping the Living Lands: Dawnshore quest to a close.
