Out of the 451 Digimon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger, there aren’t a lot that carry the same level of nostalgia as Veemon — Davis Motomiya’s energetic partner from Digimon Adventure 02 and the more recent Adventure 02: The Beginning.
Not just a fan favorite, Veemon is also one of the first and most satisfying Rookie-level Digimon that you can add to your party.
In this guide, we detail exactly how to get Veemon, the requirements you’ll need to meet, and the best way to unlock it early in the game.
When you can get Veemon

Your earliest opportunity at recruiting Veemon comes a little while after you beat MetalGreymon in the main storyline.
This fight takes place around an hour into the story, give or take, depending on your speed and exploring habits.
After you beat MetalGreymon, there are some new In-Training Digimon that begin spawning in older areas — such as Punimon, which is the gateway to obtaining Veemon.
Step 1: Obtain Punimon
Following the MetalGreymon battle, backtrack through the regions around the initial grassland and digital forest regions.
You’ll start to encounter Punimon as a wild Digimon in random encounters.
When you do:
- Collect Punimon Data to 100% or more.
- Use the Convert function within the DigiLab to incubate it into an obtainable Digimon.
If you’re playing the demo version of Time Stranger, note that Punimon may appear right before the demo’s narrative cutoff, so your chances to raise it are limited.
Step 2: Digivolve Punimon into Tsunomon
Once Punimon joins your roster, it’s time to evolve it into Tsunomon.
This first Digivolution requires minimal effort — simply get Punimon into a few battles. It should be prepared to evolve around Level 9.
To evolve:
- Open your Digivice.
- Select the Digivolve option.
- Provided the evolution is available, Tsunomon’s silhouette will be green.
- Select it, confirm, and your now-evolved Tsunomon is ready for the next step.
Step 3: Train Tsunomon into Veemon
Tsunomon can Digivolve into multiple possibilities, but to obtain Veemon, you’ll want to reach two significant stat milestones.
You can speed this up with the Load Enhancement function, where you can recycle unwanted Digimon to give experience points directly.
Veemon Digivolution Requirements
- ATK: 280 or higher
- SPD: 170 or higher
- Agent Rank: 1 (default rank, no further progress required)
Once Tsunomon has met these requirements, bring up the Digivolution menu again.
Veemon’s shadow should now appear as a potential evolution.
Confirm it — and congratulations, you now have Veemon, along with its signature, Veemon Headbutt, a fast, high-damage skill perfect for early-game combat.
