Volgin is one of the most aggressive bosses in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater — he mixes brute strength with electrical attacks. This guide outlines how to defeat Volgin as efficiently as possible while identifying ways to perform CQC takedowns, avoid his electrical strikes, and manage both the first and second phases of the fight. The strategies listed below will be able to help you defeat him and unlock the Cold War uniform.
Defeating Volgin in Metal Gear Solid Delta

Once you set all the C3 charges in the Main Wing of the Groznyj Grad Weapons Lab, Volgin will emerge to confront you. The C3 charges counting your time down give you five-minutes to beat him, which is displayed on-screen. Beating him will earn you the Cold War uniform, it is important to note that you must defeat him without using lethal force.
First Phase
Volgin mainly strikes by unleashing lightning from his fists, which follows your movements but can be dodged with well-timed crouches. Shooting him with guns won’t work, as his shield deflects bullets. You must rely on melee attacks (CQC), and unequipping your gun can make dodging lightning easier.
- Charging Attack: If Volgin charges at you and pauses to change direction, use this opportunity to execute a CQC slam.
- Lightning Charge: When he raises his arm to charge lightning, position yourself to either side and perform a CQC takedown. Firearms should only be used when he’s distracted, such as when he instructs Ocelot to be quiet. From behind, headshots are possible. After performing a CQC slam, quickly fire a few shots while he is prone.
Second Phase
When Volgin reaches half health or stamina, a cutscene occurs and Ocelot leaves the fight. During this phase, Volgin develops new attacks, including a lightning blast and twin electric beams. Avoid these attacks by crouching fully or moving out of their paths.
Continue using CQC takedowns whenever Volgin exposes himself. For a non-lethal victory, make sure to quickly collect the Cold War uniform before the next cutscene begins.
