How to Beat Lampmaster in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

The Lampmaster is the final boss of Act 1 in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It is one of the toughest battles in the game. This boss battle is split into two phases. You will need to pay attention to sound and visual cues, and know when to parry, dodge, or counterattack. This guide breaks down each phase of the battle, offering strategies to help you survive the battle.

How to Beat Lampmaster

The Lampmaster is the final boss of Act 1 in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. To beat Lampmaster, you need to complete the two-phase battle successfully.

First Phase

In the first phase, the Lampmaster releases a variety of light- and dark-based attacks, and learning how to defend against them is key to your survival.

The Light-Out Parry Sequence

One of the most important mechanics to watch for is when the Lampmaster “turns out all the lights.” In this moment, be prepared to parry four times, as it fires light-based projectiles at different party members. Time your parries to match the moment the lamp goes dark. If a party member successfully blocks every hit targeting them, they will be able to release a counterattack. This move usually follows every other attack.

The Jump Attack and Dark Explosion

The jump attack works like many other jump attacks in the game. Time your parry just before the Lampmaster hits the ground to land a counter. Another powerful move is the dark explosion, which targets a single Expeditioner. When the boss jumps and begins to descend, prepare to either dodge or parry to avoid heavy damage.

One of the deadliest moves in this phase is when the Lampmaster draws power from its lamps. As it charges up, listen for a sharp “shing” sound. That’s your cue to parry. Time this right and launch a strong counter.

Phase Two

When the Lampmaster is nearly defeated, a cutscene marks the transition into the second phase. The boss rises once more, this time introducing the complex and dangerous “lamp ritual.”

The lamp ritual

Watch the order in which the lamps light up during the ritual. Once you regain control, use free-aim to shoot the lamps in that same sequence. Doing this correctly prevents the Lampmaster from releasing its sword of light, which can hit your entire party.

A green glow on the lamp signals you’re doing it right. If you complete the ritual correctly, a prompt will confirm your success. But if you mess it up, the boss will release its powerful attack. If that happens, try to dodge or parry just as the Lampmaster turns with its sword. Dodging is better here and may reduce the incoming damage significantly.

Second Phase Attacks

The second phase includes several more attacks. When the Lampmaster fires a wave of light, watch for the visual cue and jump to avoid it, then counterattack. During its flying combo, a four-hit sequence, audio cues become important. As the boss screeches, parry each hit for minimal damage. The same goes for its arm-strike combo, which also involves four hits. Again, use the sound cues to time your parries effectively.

Rewards

Once you have overcome the second phase, the Lampmaster will finally be defeated. You will earn plenty of XP, a Shape of Life to upgrade your revive tint, and a Pictos called At Death’s Door.
