120 Days On Herring And Cheese Quest Walkthrough – Tainted Grail: The Fall Of Avalon

“120 Days on Herring and Cheese” is a quirky side quest in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, where you’re tasked with helping eccentric chef Rumpolt Finnini craft a bizarre delicacy. Track down rare ingredients, unlock a unique spell, and uncover a humorous (and explosive) twist as you turn culinary chaos into magical mayhem.

How to Start the Quest

When you bump into the quirky chef Rumpolt Finnini, you’ll quickly realize he’s been stuck in his underground kitchen for way too long. When you meet him, it becomes clear that isolation hasn’t dulled his ambition though. In fact, he’s on a mission to perfect a truly bizarre-sounding recipe: Sour Herring and Cheese. And he wants you to fetch the ingredients.

This isn’t just dinner—it’s art, apparently. Rumpolt prides himself on having the most “elevated” palate in all of Avalon. He’ll even tag a location on your map, sending you off to find a one-of-a-kind fish for his dish.

How to Get the Fish

Your destination? A lonely little island tucked away on the far eastern edge of the Horns of the South. It’s only reachable by swimming from the Ruined Broch, so get ready to take a dip.

Once you’re ashore, you’ll come across an old fishing rod left beside a weathered boat. That’s your cue—grab the rod and head to the water near the marked location. Cast your line and watch the bobber closely. If you’re not getting any action after three bobs, just reel in and try again.

Eventually, you’ll land the prized catch: the really special herring.

Time to Get the Cheese

With the fish in hand, it’s time to revisit Rumpolt’s cozy (and probably greasy) kitchen. From the spot where you first found him, head down the steps. The door to the right can be picked open—and you should do exactly that.

Inside, you’ll find that the man clearly has a cheese obsession. Grab a wedge, then toss both your ingredients—the herring and the cheese—into the cooking pot sitting in the corner.

What comes out isn’t exactly pretty, but it’s pungent enough for Rumpolt to pick up the scent immediately. Hand the dish over to complete the quest.

Reward: Rumpolt’s Revenge Spell

Rumpolt’s gratitude comes in the form of a spell unlike anything you’ve seen before: Rumpolt’s Revenge.

Tap Cast: Lose a bit of health to magically produce a wedge of cheese—whenever, wherever. That’s right, you’ve basically got cheese on tap.

Hold to Charge: Aim it at any living creature (like animals or NPCs), and a glowing cheese icon will appear above them. If you manage to hold the charge until the icon disappears, the target will quite literally explode into cheese. Wedges everywhere.

Not every enemy or NPC will respond to it, but as you grow in power, more targets will crumble before the might of dairy-based magic.

Unlock the “Ironic” trophy/achievement?

Looking to unlock the Ironic achievement? Here’s how: take the very spell Rumpolt gave you, aim it at him, and let it rip.

He’s the perfect guinea pig—he doesn’t resist, and using the spell on him won’t alert guards or nearby NPCs. Just remember, this does count as an aggressive action. Once you commit, there’s no undoing it. Rumpolt will perish in a glorious explosion of cheese, dropping all his inventory and leaving behind a mountain of dairy.

Be prepared—someone might take issue with you turning chefs into cheese, so have a weapon ready just in case.
